Women suffering from the side effects of Essure are publishing their experiences

Wednesday, December 6, 2017 - Essure Problems, Essure Awareness, and Essure Petition are just a few of the Facebook pages on social media that have provided a forum for Essure patients that are experiencing severe, debilitating pain from their Essure implanted birth control device. Women have suffered from Essure being prone to breakage, migration throughout the reproductive system, and metal allergies due to its Nickel plating. The device has been known to puncture the fallopian tubes and uterine wall. In addition, Essure coils are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers that may yield endocrine disruptors. Bayer has admitted Essure causes autoimmune disorders.

Essure Problems Facebook group allows their 35,000 registered members to post their experiences with the much-maligned birth control device. Women have reported that the pain they suffer daily "is worse than going through labor." Some women are in so much pain that they cannot go back to work and have lost their jobs and income. Excessive bleeding is also a side effect of Essure. Abdominal swelling, migraine headaches, a feeling of "ovaries exploding, and chronic fatigue that can not be alleviated by sleep or rest." Others report that they are experiencing the symptoms of menopause as young as their late 20's, as well as, "pelvic pain, abdominal bloating, migraines, severe panic disorder, varicose veins in my legs, twitching pain in my legs, chest pains, and so much more." "Extreme pain in the lower back, stomach, and pelvic area, to the point I couldn't walk sometime, constant nausea and fatigue, loss of hair and really bad allergic reactions I couldn't explain. The bleeding and pain got so bad I had to have a total hysterectomy on 8/16/17."

Essure Black Box Warning

In addition to changing the product description from that of a removable device to permanent, the FDA recently issued a Black Box Warning for Essure. According to CNN, "more than 5,000 women filed grievances with the FDA between November 2002 and May 2015, complaining of unintended pregnancies, miscarriages, stillbirths and severe pain and bleeding after an Essure implantation." The FDA reserves its Black Box warning as a sort of "skull and crossbones" and is issued only in the most extreme circumstances where the drug or medical device could cause serious injury or death.

Even though each woman has her own unique set of problems from the Essure device, one element that has unified them is the opinion that the U.S. government regulatory agencies have not done enough and should take Essure off the market until further definitive studies can be found. Tens of thousands of women have written on Facebook and described what life has become since getting an Essure birth control device and want to warn other to at least be aware of the potential consequences of inserting a foreign object permanently into their bodies.

And if the vast array of pain and suffering women are experiencing is not enough, women who seek to have the Essure device removed are facing doctors who are not trained to do so. When diagnosing the Essure implant many find that the device has become so encased in scar tissue that only a complete or partial hysterectomy will remove the device, the same dangerous, invasive surgical procedure that the Essure device was intended to replace.
