Essure Fails To Live Up To Its Promises

Essure side effects have caused pain and suffering in thousands of women who once were told the device was safe

Friday, December 29, 2017 - In 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the only non-surgical, implanted, permanent birth control device, Essure, in the United States. Essure, a soft metal coil resembling a spring from a typical ballpoint pen, is intended for use in women 21 and over and since its inception, close to one million women have chosen the device. Essure implantation can be done in the comfort and convenience of the doctor's office and completed in less than an hour. Doctors advise their Essure patients that they should continue to use birth control for three months after their Essure implant procedure while scar tissue builds up and encases the coiled device.

Essure was considered at first to be a breakthrough in birth control, however, problems with Essure began to surface almost immediately. Women experienced procedure adverse side effects that they were not made aware of with an advanced warning. Such side effects include excessive bleeding, unbearable pain and cramps, and swelling as the device has been known to cause infection at the opening of the fallopian tube where it is designed to cause inflammation. Other times the device has migrated through the fallopian tube and into the uterus, perforating it and causing unbearable stabbing pain. When women have undergone surgery to remove the device, doctors have found the device, not in the fallopian tubes where it was intended to stay, but as far away as in a woman's abdomen and pelvic cavity.

The severe complications from Essure birth control include having to have surgery to attempt to remove the device. Such surgery often results in the patient having to undergo a hysterectomy as the device may be completely encased in scar tissue. Nausea, fatigue, rashes, hair and weight loss, chronic pain are other adverse side effects that have been reported to the FDA. Over 300 fetal deaths have been attributed to ectopic pregnancies when Essure does not perform as advertised.

These problems have led to tens of thousands of complaints in forums sponsored by social media site Facebook. The Facebook group, "Essure Problems" has over 35,000 members and most of them have shared their disastrous experiences with the Essure device. In response to the complaints, the FDA has required Bayer to place a "Black Box" warning on packages of Essure, a designation that is reserved for drugs and devices that can cause serious injury and death.

Bayer reported a 2017 loss of around $413 million due to Essure litigation costs and 3,700 lawsuits had been filed a number Bayer now says is over 10,000 lawsuits.

Considering the adverse side effects of Essure, more women seeking sterilization are looking to other alternative methods. Tubal ligation, a.k.a., having one's "tubes tied" is one such procedure and requires general anesthesia. During a tubal ligation, the doctor makes a small incision and inserts a laparoscope to cut and seal off the fallopian tubes. Tubal ligation is nearly 100% effective, however, critics of the procedure point out that it offers no protection against sexually transmitted infections. Men also can practice sterilization through a procedure called a vasectomy. During a vascectomy, the tubes that carry sperm called the vas deferens, are severed and tied. Like tubal ligation, the proceedure is 99 percent effective in preventing.
