Essure Women Write About Their Experiences

Notorious consumer safety advocate Erin Brokovich addresses the problems with the Essure birth control device

Wednesday, December 20, 2017 - The Facebook group, Essure Problems provides a forum for over 35,000 women claiming that Essure has caused them severe health problems and unwanted pregnancies. In the group, women write about the side effects of Essure like excessive bleeding, chronic fatigue, head hair loss, tooth decay from infection, and allergic and autoimmune reactions. Another Essure victim Facebook group is headed by consumer safety advocate Erin Brokovich claims to be leading a charge of another 20,000 or so Essure victims that are fighting to have the device taken off of the U.S. market. On September 24, 2015, the FDA held a panel meeting to review the risks of Essure and "criticized the device maker for failing to collect the information that could have predicted the risks of Essure. "

Women tell the story of the Essure coil puncturing their uterine wall after coming detached from the fallopian tube and migrating. Essure devices have even been found in a woman's abdomen and the pelvic cavity having completely punctured the reproductive organs. Women who sought to have the device removed tell stories of doctors finding up to five Essure devices in their bodies, placed there by doctors untrained in their insertion and follow-up care. Hysterectomies are often the only choice for women who wish to have the device removed only to find that it is so encased in scar tissue that its removal alone is impossible. Women write of constant itching and all-over body rashes and painful, stabbing pain in the pelvic region. Others are in so much discomfort that they are unable to get out of bed with cramps, back pain, migraine and weight gain. Nearly all of the Essure women report a complete lack of sexual desire attributable to their Essure symptoms, making the need for a birth control device a moot point.

In addition to the Facebook Group's call to action, and to the FDA's over 10,000 formal Essure adverse event reports, a U.S. Congressman has called for Essure to be removed from the U.S. market. On November 4, 2015, Rep. Fitzpatrick, Michael G. [R-PA-8] introduced H.R. 3920, a bill intended to "require the Food and Drug Administration to withdraw approval for Essure, a medical device for permanent, non-surgical female sterilization." The bill is also aimed at strengthening the FDA's medical device review process and increasing a company's accountability for dangerous medical devices. In addition to the formal complaints, the FDA has been found to have understated the number of fetal deaths attributable to Essure. Originally reporting 3 fetal deaths, the number actually of fetal deaths due to assure is reported to be over 300.

In spite of the evidence to the contrary, Bayer, maker of Essure continues to claim that the product is "overwhelmingly safe."

The thousands of women filing Essure birth control lawsuits disagree, and clearly wish to be heard.
