Family Planning Options Including Essure

Women have several basic family planning options to choose from and each carries a unique set of risks

Monday, June 4, 2018 - Family planning is an essential part of a woman's life and a woman has the right to know the adverse side effects each birth control option carries. Women usually undergo surgery for permanent birth control is when they are in the hospital having just had what they consider to be their last child. Women may choose a surgically invasive procedure such as a hysterectomy or tubal ligation as they are in the hospital anyway and will be laid up for a period of time due to having just given birth. Both methods of birth control require a period of recovery of a few weeks for the tissues affected by the surgery to heal. A tubal ligation is a permanent form of complete birth control as the Fallopian tubes are tied and sealed, blocking a woman's eggs from reaching the uterus and preventing fertilization.

Rather than tubal ligation, hysterectomy is an option. During a hysterectomy, the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and Fallopian tubes are completely removed. The procedure is done in a hospital operating room by a gynecological surgeon and anesthesia is required. Women who have had a hysterectomy no longer have monthly periods and may be required to take estrogen. Rather than choose invasive surgery, women have the option of other minimally invasive forms of birth control.

The birth control pill is used by around 20% of the females that desire not to become pregnant. "The Pill" prevents ovulation and pregnancy cannot occur as no eggs are produced. Birth control pills are around 95% effective. Common side effects of the pill are nausea, breast hypersensitivity, weight gain, headaches, and moodiness.

Today's most controversial method of birth control is the Essure Birth control device. Resembling the spring from a retractable ballpoint pen, the procedure can be undertaken in the comfort and convenience of a doctor's office. The device is inserted into the vagina where it attaches to the Fallopian tubes. Abrasive fibers wrapped around the spring-like coil cause irritation and encourage the formation of scar tissue to hold the device in place on the inner Fallopian tube wall. The device has been alleged to cause chronic pain, allergic reactions, reproductive organ perforation and unwanted pregnancies. Over 300 fetal deaths from abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirths have been reported to the FDA by women complaining about Essure.

Tens of thousands of women have experienced severe side effects from the Essure device and have hired an Essure attorney in order to file a claim against Bayer AG, maker of Essure. Essure comes with the following warning: "Some patients implanted with the Essure System for Permanent Birth Control have experienced and/or reported adverse events, including perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, identification of inserts in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, persistent pain, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions."

It is important to get all of the information regarding the potentially hazardous side effects that the various birth control methods carry. Please take a moment to visit social media pages to review the experiences other women have had while on any particular method of birth control.
