Leading Birth Control Options

Women have several birth control options to choose from including Essure

Friday, December 1, 2017 - Women who decide that they do not want children under any circumstances have several options to choose from. A woman may wish to have a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is a surgical removal of the uterus and possibly the cervix, the ovaries, and the fallopian tubes. A hysterectomy requires general anesthesia, is permanent and irreversible and can be partial or total. Hysterectomy is an effective birth control solution for a woman wanting a permanent birth control solution.

Another option is tubal ligation, a surgical procedure whereby a woman's fallopian tubes are clamped, severed, sealed or tied preventing the eggs from reaching the uterus. Another name for a tubal ligation is having one's "tubes tied." A tubal ligation is known to be reversible, sometimes but not always, in the case of an emergency. All the risks associated with invasive surgery is applicable to both hysterectomy and tubal ligation and both can be considered a permanent birth control.

According to the official company website, the Essure birth control device is, "a minimally invasive procedure, Essure placement requires no cutting, leaves no visible scars, and can be performed in your doctor's office." The home page heading describes the product's safety warnings, "some patients implanted with the Essure System for Permanent Birth Control have experienced and/or reported adverse events, including perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, identification of inserts in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, persistent pain, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions."

Women using the Essure birth control device suffer from physical maladies such as severe pain, abnormally heavy monthly bleeding, and autoimmune disorders. Others have reported inexplicable weight gain and a metallic taste in the mouth. Often times when a woman goes to her doctor to describe these symptoms they are told that their problems are downplayed by physicians as merely psychosomatic, in other words, "it is all in your head." Unable to accept that diagnosis Essure patients have turned to social media to determine if other women are having similar problems with Essure. What most have found is that they are not alone in suffering severe complications soon after having the Essure birth control device implanted. To alleviate their suffering women who choose to have the Essure birth control device removed may be forced to undergo the same dangerous hysterectomy surgery that the Essure device was supposed to avoid in the first place.

The Essure birth control device was marketed to women as not only an effective measure of birth control but also that the device could be removed when a couple wished to have children. The new product warning states that Essure is a "permanent" birth control measure and patients should no longer consider its removal as a viable option if a woman changes her mind and wants to become pregnant. While the Essure coil is intended to affix itself and stay in place on the wall of the fallopian tube, it often migrates and can perforate a woman's vital reproductive organs such as the uterus. Essure was also sold as being a safer alternative than having to undergo surgery which carries dangers in and of itself.
