Essure Removal Doctors Finds The Device Calcifies Causing Excruciating Pain and Potential Organ Perforation

Wednesday, July 3, 2019 - The Essure birth control device is a soft flexible coil that resembles the spring from a ball point pen, surrounded by fibers whose purpose it is to cause irritation on the interior of the Fallopian tubes, create responsive scar tissue, and permanently encapsulate the device in place. Bayer's assessment of Essure as soft and flexible may have been exaggerated, however, as user experiences have reported over 26,000 adverse event reports to the US Food and Drug Administration since the approval of the birth control implant in 2002. Over 10,000 of these newer reports deal with Essure removal and doctors are shocked at what they are finding. Doctors are being inundated with Essure patients that want the device removed but are unable or unwilling to attempt the procedure. Even women lucky enough to find an Essure removal doctor should note that the doctor probably has only a year or two of experience at best doing so and will use their surgery as a learning experience. The Guardian interviewed doctors from around Europe to see what they thought about Essure removal. "Bas Veersema, a Dutch gynecologist who has removed implants from almost 500 women, said his clinic had to learn through trial and error how to take the implants out without the need for a hysterectomy and without leaving behind shards of metal." Dutch physician Dr. Veersema, reports that the once pliable device usually calcifies, hardens, produces sharp ends, and "chicken wings" according to a recent article in The Guardian and that the surrounding tissues usually appear swollen and unhealthy. The doctor's patients describe their Essure experience as the feeling of having a nail inside of them and removal intact completely alleviates the pain. The calcification and sharpening of Essure would account for the incidences where Essure has been found in the abdominal cavity having apparently poked through the Fallopian tube, undoubtedly an extremely painful event. In addition, Essure often migrates up the Fallopian tube and into the uterus where contractions embed the device in the tissues of the uterus. Natural cramping attempt to expel the foreign object only sinks Essure's sharp edges deeper and deeper, and the only way to remove Essure is through a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is a major surgery requiring general anesthesia and an overnight hospital stay.

To date, Bayer estimates that they have sold approximately one million Essure devices and boast that studies indicate a 97% satisfaction rate. In spite of the testimonials of over 40,000 Essure women on Facebook, Bayer continues to say Essure is safe and the company continues to stand behind the product's risk/reward profile. Bayer discontinued sales of Essure in the US at the end of 2018 as the company had already done throughout the rest of the world. Many doctors are ignoring the Essure warnings and continue to implant their patients with the device they have obtained from Essure kits they have either inventories or obtained online.
