Essures Features and Drawbacks

A careful analysis of the features and drawbacks of the Essure birth control device reveal the dangers of the product

Monday, December 18, 2017 - There are several features of the Essure birth control device that have attracted hundreds of thousands of women to consider using the device. Among them are the fact that implanting Essure can be done in the comfort and convenience of the doctor's office and does not require admission to the hospital. Unlike a hysterectomy or tubal ligation, no incision is necessary nor is anesthesia required. Implantation with Essure generally takes less than an hour to complete. Essure's website confirms this stating, "As a minimally invasive procedure, Essure placement requires no cutting, leaves no visible scars, and can be performed in your doctor's office."

Essure has come under fire from thousands of women who suffer from the unadvertised side effects of the device. Essure has a history of potential complications that can have permanent, life-altering effects for a woman and her family.

Ectopic Pregnancy. A small percentage of women become pregnant despite using Essure, and that pregnancy is usually ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy is one where fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes, not in the uterus where it belongs. The situation where the embryo is required to grow outside of the uterus is usually fatal to the unborn child and researchers have found that over 300 fetal deaths have occurred from unintended ectopic Essure pregnancies.

Allergic Reaction. Another complication reported by Essure women is an allergic response to the Nickle-Titanium outer coil component of the device. Essure is composed of five different materials, Nitinol, a nickel-titanium alloy, Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers, stainless steel, Platinum, and Silver. Essure implant doctors are required to test their patients for allergies to Nickel, however, this testing is often overlooked.

Infections. Fibers surrounding the Essure device are designed to cause inflammation and create scar tissue blocking the union of the sperm and egg. Infection occurs due to this process as the body's immune system rejects the foreign object or because of unsterile handling of the device. Infections can cause extreme and chronic pain, bleeding, changes in the menstrual cycle, and fatigue.

Migration of the Device. The Essure device is designed to stay put at the opening inch of the fallopian tube when Essure fibers grab and stick to the fallopian tube tissue. This does not always happen, however, and Essure has been reported to migrate and puncture the uterus causing stabbing pain, bleeding, infection and requiring surgery to remove the device and repair or remove the uterus. At the very top of the home page of the Essure.com website, Bayer now admits this stating, "some patients implanted with the Essure System for Permanent Birth Control have experienced and/or reported adverse events, including perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, identification of (Essure) inserts in the abdominal or pelvic cavity." The company also admits that Essure can cause, "persistent pain, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions. If the device needs to be removed to address such an adverse event, a surgical procedure will be required."

Thousands of women have consulted with Essure lawyers in an effort to sue the manufacturer. Some are seeking compensation for medical expenses incurred, lost wages and extensive pain and suffering, but most just want to send a clear message to the manufacturer and prevent other women from going through the same ordeal as they have.
