Permanent Birth Control Options For Women

Hysterectomy, tubal ligation, and Essure Systems remain the most common methods of permanent birth control used by women

Tuesday, May 1, 2018 - Most women generally assume that most birth control options are permanent and irreversible and only consider them when they are finished having a family. The most common permanent birth control options are hysterectomy, tubal ligation, and the Essure System. Including the Essure System on this list may surprise some women who were advised that Essure was a reversible option and could be easily removed when the time came to start or continue having children. Millions of Essure devices were sold on this premise. The fact is that the Essure birth control coil becomes so encased in scar tissue within the Fallopian tubes that nothing short of a complete hysterectomy will remove them.

A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus, performed by a gynecologist in a hospital operating room and under general anesthesia. In addition to removing the uterus, the procedure may also remove the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other reproductive parts. There are two types of hysterectomy total and partial. A total hysterectomy is the complete removal of the uterus and cervix at a minimum. The fallopian tubes and ovaries can also be included in a total hysterectomy. Only the uterus is removed in a partial hysterectomy. The severe side effects of removing the uterus can be the early onset of menopause, painful intercourse, and heavy monthly bleeding. Other side effects include painful urination and a weakened bladder. Because of the invasive surgery and painful side effects women often choose tubal ligation to hysterectomy.

As with a hysterectomy, during a tubal ligation surgery is performed and a woman is left sterile. The fallopian tubes are clamped, blocked and sealed. In this way, eggs are obstructed from reaching the uterus and fertilization is prevented. Tubal ligation is performed in the hospital and on an outpatient basis. Many women choose this procedure when they are in the hospital giving birth to what they intend to be their last child. With tubal ligation, there is a recovery time of one to three weeks and a woman is protected from pregnancy immediately. As with a hysterectomy, tubal ligation is permanent.

By far today's most popular form of birth control is the Essure Birth control system. The device which resembles a spring from a retractable ballpoint pen is inserted into each fallopian tube. The product is designed to cause irritation on the fallopian tube, and the abrasion intended to produce enough scar tissue to create a blockage preventing a man's sperm from reaching a woman's eggs. A high percentage of women have over the last few years reported unexpected side effects and complications with the device that have caused life-changing problems, and have hired an Essure attorney in order to file a claim against Essure parent company, German multinational conglomerate Bayer AG. Essure now carries a warning label stating, "Some patients implanted with the Essure System for Permanent Birth Control have experienced and/or reported adverse events, including perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, identification of inserts in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, persistent pain, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions." If you are contemplating having an Essure System implanted please review the comments on the Essure Problems Facebook page where thousands of women elaborate on their Essure birth control complications.
