Metal Hypersensitivity Can Cause Unbearable Essure Side Effects

Many women are allergic to the metals that make up Essure and were not made aware that this could be a problem when receiving the Essure birth control implant

Wednesday, January 30, 2019 - One of Essure's more frequently reported problems is that for one reason or another the metal, spring-like birth control coil becomes dislodged from or otherwise fails to adhere to the inner wall of the Fallopian tube and migrates either intact or in pieces into the uterus where it becomes trapped by naturally-occurring contractions. Each attempt to expel the metal foreign object simply sinks Essure's sharp, dagger-like edges deeper and deeper into the delicate uterine tissues causing extreme pain, lacerations, and uncontrollable bleeding. Many women experiencing this Essure product failure have consulted with an Essure attorney to see whether or not they qualify to file a claim against the device's manufacturer Bayer, and the doctor who may have misrepresented the device. In addition to the aforementioned device migration, another equally troubling Essure side effect is the autoimmune problems that the device's heavy metals can cause. Essure women have reported experiencing allergic reactions from being hypersensitive to Essure's Nickel component. Approximately 10% of all women have metal allergies or hypersensitivity to one degree or another. Essure is made from a nickel-titanium alloy, polyester (PET) fibers, stainless steel, platinum, and silver. Doctors are required to test Essure patients for a number of immune system-related conditions before implanting the device. The Mayo Clinic advises women to first check to see if they have an allergy to metal including Nickel before taking their doctor's advice to use Essure. The clinic also advises that one should check to see if they have a pre-existing "autoimmune disease, which may trigger excessive inflammation around the coil inserts."

Essure's product guide includes a warning that a woman's metal hypersensitivity can cause Essure complications. Under the category entitled "Long-Term Risk," Essure women are forced to sign a page that they have been made aware of the autoimmune problems that they may be exposing themselves to. The Essure document states "...Essure inserts contain metals including nickel, titanium, stainless steel (iron, chromium, nickel), platinum and silver-tin, as well as a material called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). ... some women may develop allergic reactions to the inserts following implantation and have signs or symptoms such as rash and itching. This may occur even if there is no prior history of sensitivity to those materials. ...there is no reliable test to predict ahead of time who may develop a reaction to the insert." Finally, Essure women are forced to acknowledge that should these or other symptoms arise that Essure removal will require surgery. The entire Essure patient information booklet required to be given to Essure patients can be found on Bayer's website.

Essure sales were discontinued by Bayer as of December 31, 2018, however, the company stopped short of voluntarily recalling existing inventories of the product. As a result of this lack of action, Essure continues to be recommended and implanted in unsuspecting women seeking to prevent pregnancy.
