Essure Was Preceded By The Safer and Less Expensive Mirena IUD

Bayer's Mirena IUD is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and has adverse side effects that are a walk in the park compared to Essure

Tuesday, February 26, 2019 - Bayer is in the midst of contending with an ever-increasing number of lawsuits brought by women that have been injured by the faulty Essure birth control device. Tens of thousands of women have filed complaints with the FDA as well as writing about their horrible Essure experiences on the Essure Problems Facebook group. Over 26,000 complaints and 16,000 lawsuits have been filed against Bayer that allege Essure is unsafe and that Bayer failed to forward thousands of adverse event reports to the FDA. Others, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette are "claiming fraud and negligence in the marketing and monitoring of the product." Essure has been known to break free from its intended moorings within a woman's Fallopian tubes and descend to the uterus where natural contractions to expel the metal coil only dig its sharp talons deeper and deeper into the flesh, lacerating the uterus and causing severe pain and excessive bleeding. As a result of FDA action to warn woman of Essure these and other potential adverse side effects, Essure sales plummeted by 90% in 2018 prompting the company to discontinue sales of the device at the end of the year. Bayer continues to stand by the risk/reward profile of Essure and the company officially claims that woman that have had the device implanted have nothing to worry about. Essure, however, was marketed to physicians as a breakthrough birth control method preferable to another the company already had on the market. Women injured by Essure birth control device should consult with an Essure birth control device attorney.

The Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) works to prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and reducing the number of sperm reaching the uterus. The device also is designed to physically block the sperm that does make their way through the cervix before they can reach the ovaries. Merina slowly secretes a progestin hormone used in birth control pills called levonorgestrel. These three features of Mirena make the device 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Patients using Mirena birth control IUD report cranial pressure, headaches and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) double vision, neck and facial pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Mirena warns their patients that patients have reported getting a serious pelvic infection called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) as well as Ovarian cysts." The Mirena IUD is coated with hormones designed to reduce a woman's monthly period. The official Mirena website boasts that "Mirena is the first and only IUD (intrauterine device) birth control that is FDA-approved to treat heavy periods, also known as heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) in women who choose intrauterine birth control." Mirena is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy for up to five years and can be removed at any time. Although the main headline reads that Mirena is designed to reduce a woman's period, the company lawyers warn women that "bleeding and spotting may increase in the first 3 to 6 months and remain irregular. Periods over time usually become shorter, lighter, or may stop."

"In April 2018, Bayer entered into an agreement to pay $12.2 million to settle lawsuits filed by users of Mirena - an intrauterine system for long-term contraception - who had alleged the IUD resulted in perforation of the uterus." according to a recent issue of Variety Magazine. The payment was distributed to 4,100 users of the IUD. An additional 480 lawsuits have been filed claiming the device causes idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IH) IH is defined as increased pressure within the skull for no apparent reason and can lead to permanent blindness in some patients. IH results from a build-up of spinal fluid leading to headaches and blindness.
