Bayer Issues New Essure Problems Denial

Women have been lied to, both overtly and by omission, by Bayer and Gynecologists recommending the Essure birth control device

Friday, November 23, 2018 - After having written numerous articles on the hazards of the Essure birth control device, I don't know what I find most infuriating. On the one hand, Essure patients were misled by their gynecologists that Essure was safe and effective and that it required no surgery. Secondly, it has been alleged that doctors are receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal yet unethical speaking and educational fees from Bayer in what appears to be a marketing scheme designed to sway the physician's birth control recommendation towards Essure. And if that is not enough, Bayer states that women should look elsewhere when assigning blame for their Essure pain and suffering. Over 12,000 women have already looked to the court system by filing lawsuits against Bayer for their problems with Essure.

On the first point, Essure does, in fact, require surgery quite often. Women that have Essure who wish to have the device removed and are successful enough to find an Essure removal doctor sometimes are faced with no other choice than to have a full hysterectomy to alleviate their unbearable pain and suffering. Almost all patients that have Essure removed experience immediate and total relief from their pain, excessive bleeding, or cramping. The most common response from a woman that has had Essure removed is that they feel as if they are re-born and can get back living life.

Secondly, Essure doctors literally take non-surgical fees from Bayer for recommending and defending Essure. These payments are for phony speaking engagement and bogus training courses that are advertised to other doctors and their staff but are rarely attended. And remember, it is not like an Essure doctor is performing life-saving bypass surgery or recommending a program of chemotherapy for terminal cancer in a child. Essure doctors recommend the product to make money and for no other reason. There is no medical benefit to a patient for using Essure. As a matter of fact, just the opposite may be the case as Essure may give sexually active women a sense of security against unwanted pregnancies but does nothing to stop the spread of STD's or AIDS.

Bayer's denial that Essure could not be the reason for a woman's suffering starts in the gynecologist's office. Essure doctors regurgitate the company line as to the safety of Essure and tell their patients that they are crazy and that the pain is all in their head. In a statement made to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. A Bayer spokesperson had this to say on the subject. "Many of the symptoms reported by Essure users, such as pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding, are common health issues among all women," Dr. Edio Zampaglione, vice president for U.S. medical affairs at Bayer, said in an emailed statement. "It is critical that a woman who is experiencing these symptoms work closely with her health care provider to investigate all possible causes."

Bayer's unwillingness to put patient safety above company profits did not evade the attention of the US FDA which in 2018 forced the company to voluntarily pull the product from the lucrative US marked by the end of 2018. Once aware of the magnitude of suffering caused by Essure, the FDA required doctors to have patients review and sign a piece of paper acknowledging that they were aware of the potential side effects. As innocuous as the disclaimer was, few informed women went on to accept the sterilization procedure and sales of Essure plummeted 90% forcing the company recall.
