Making Informed Essure Birth Control Decisions

Essure women now have more pertinent, accurate information about Essure's side effects with which to make informed birth control decisions

Monday, July 9, 2018 - With so many birth control options available it is challenging for a woman to make an accurate decision. Hysterectomy, tubal ligation, birth control pills and the Essure birth control device are all popular methods of birth control. Getting all of the facts pertaining to the potential adverse side effects of these various methods is critical in order for a woman to make an informed decision. Women who have chosen the Essure birth control device, however, appear to have been left in the dark as to its negative side effects. The device was marketed as an alternative to hysterectomy, tubal ligation and birth control pills which have been shown to cause bleeding between periods, migraine headaches, missed periods, weight gain and the ever-present fear of developing breast cancer. Essure is a spring shaped device like the spring in a ballpoint pen that is implanted through the vagina in minutes. Essure adheres to the inner walls of the Fallopian tube. Scar tissue develops to block fertilization.

Unlike tubal ligation and hysterectomy that require invasive surgery, Essure requires no recovery time to speak of. The only delay with Essure is that it takes three months for sufficient scar tissue to develop around the device and pregnancy can occur during this time. Because tubal ligation and hysterectomy require a three month period of recovery, women are recommended to have those procedures performed immediately after having giving birth while they are in the hospital.

The fact that Essure can be implanted through the vagina without the risks of surgery is a major selling point for Essure. Essure women are told that the procedure is a quick, convenient, and effective method of preventing pregnancy. Women are advised that Essure can be inserted in the comfort and convenience of the doctor's office without having to go to be admitted to the hospital. What a prospective Essure patient is not told is that Essure women suffer from a laundry list of severe, life-altering and sometimes catastrophic side effects.

Over 35,000 women have experienced severe, life-altering side effects from using Essure device and formed the Essure Problems Facebook group to alert others of Essure's risks since Bayer Pharmaceuticals and the medical have community failed to do so. Thousands of Essure women have hired an Essure attorney to sue Bayer for reimbursement of their medical expenses, lost wages, and the pain and suffering they have been forced to endure. As a result of their efforts to alert others as to Essure's side effects, Essure now comes with the following warning: "Some patients implanted with the Essure System for Permanent Birth Control have experienced and/or reported adverse events, including perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, identification of inserts in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, persistent pain, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions." In addition, Essure doctors are forced to fill out and sign a questionnaire that proves in writing that their patient has been advised of the negative side effects of Essure.
