Bayer's decision to stop marketing Essure birth control device as of the end of 2018 is starting to look like more of a marketing ploy than a legitimate attempt at concern for patient safety

Thursday, April 25, 2019 - Women's health activists and Essure sufferers around the world initially praised Bayer Inc. for what was believed to be a voluntary market withdrawal of the product in order to study the product's safety. As it turns out, nothing could have been further from the truth. Bayer Inc. continues to deny most of the adverse side effects that are caused by Essure and to stand by what it calls Essure's positive risk-reward profile. The Essure web site continues to promote the Essure without interruption and touts the Essure procedure's ease and convenience as "a minimally invasive, Essure placement requires no cutting, leaves no visible scars, and can be performed in your doctor's office." Not only does the Essure website continue to promote the device but doctors are continuing to recommend the device to their patients. This gentle procedure can be performed in a doctor's office in less than 10 minutes." Planned Parenthood goes on to encourage Essure by highlighting that many insurance companies will pay for the device, no surgery or general anesthesia is needed, the device does not release hormones, there is no downtime from work or family, and finally that the device is trusted by hundreds of thousands of women.

In contrast to the efforts of those who seek to profit by keeping Essure on the market, close to 45000 women have joined the select Essure Problems Facebook group and Bayer admits that around 30000 women are suing the company for damages caused by Essure. Women who contemplate getting Essure should be aware that even though the device is non-invasive, chances are that they will need to have a complete and total hysterectomy to remove the device. Side effects the company admits include "...perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, identification of inserts in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, persistent pain, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions."
