Doctors That Fail to Recognize Essure Complications Commit Medical Malpractice

Tuesday, December 4, 2018 - The Essure birth control device is a small metal spring-like coil that is inserted into the Fallopian tubes where it causes irritation and scar tissue that blocks fertilization. According to an article in the Guardian.com, many women that want to remove Essure are told that the pain they are experiencing is "psychosomatic" meaning that it really does not exist and that the pain is just "in their heads." One Essure woman, for example, went back to her gynecologist complaining of severe lower back and kidney pain and thinking that Essure was to blame and asking that it be removed. The doctor summarily dismissed the Essure device as a potential cause of the pain and instead placed the woman on antibiotics for a non-existent urinary tract infection. After getting no relief the woman went to another gynecologist that told her that the only way to remove Essure was to have a radical hysterectomy, removing her entire female reproductive system to make sure that Essure was completely removed. She agreed and since then has been completely pain-free.

Another woman who decided to seek sterilization after her fifth child was born was recommended Essure. The woman was sold on the convenience of how quickly and easily Essure could be implanted. Unfortunately, the woman immediately experienced "intense pain and persistent bleeding," pain she described as the worst she had ever experienced. The result was having to have her fallopian tubes and part of the uterus removed due to Essure breaking apart and migrating to the uterus. When Essure winds up in the uterus, the organ naturally contracts and causes painful cramps when trying to expel the foreign object. Because Essure is a sharp metal coil the contraction just set device's hooks deeper and deeper into the uterine tissue causing intense pain. After the partial hysterectomy, the woman reports that she feels fine again.

Yet another Essure woman developed severe health problems that included "Crohn's disease, extremely heavy periods, hair loss and teeth falling out." When the Essure device was removed, the pain and suffering subsided.
