Essure Complications Trigger A Worldwide Health Crisis

Essure women around the world are suffering from similar life-threatening side effects

Thursday, September 13, 2018 - Medical communities around the world look to the United States for guidance in determining the relative safety of medical devices and the Essure birth control coil is no exception. Over 750,000 women worldwide have the Essure birth control device implanted in their Fallopian tubes and experts consider it is just a matter of time before adverse side effects force thousands of women to come forward to have them removed. Bayer has pulled Essure from the US market and set off a wave of panic amongst Essure women around the world.

Australian women who have been injured by Essure have joined together to file a class action lawsuit against Bayer joining others in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, In addition to these countries, Essure has been pulled from the market in South Africa, the European Union, and South America as well. One Australian Essure patient describes her Essure experience as "a living hell" that has left her unable to care for her three young children. The woman has experienced extreme "weight gain, bladder infections, incontinence, depression, migraines, chronic fatigue, cramps, a reduced libido, and severe pain after sex."

In Canada, the Canadian health ministry, Health Canada has initiated an official Essure review over the safety concerns for the device. Canada is considering forcing the company to place a "black boxed warning" on the product similar to the one required in the United States. One Canadian woman, a mother of four was talked into Essure when she went to the gynecologist to for a tubal ligation. The woman says she has bled constantly and been in pain from the very first minute she had Essure implanted. When she went in to have the device removed in order to attempt to alleviate her chronic symptoms, she was forced to have a hysterectomy.

In Europe, women are described to have been left in "suicidal pain" from the Essure birth control coil and the European Union has suspended the company's commercial license to sell the product there. According to www.independant.co.uk "Many of its recipients have reported joint and abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, chronic fever, cramping, fatigue, and hair loss, with some reporting "suicidal" desperation." Physicians in the UK and throughout the EU have been urged by health officials to discontinue recommending Essure immediately.

Essure is a one-inch device resembling the spring on a retractable ballpoint pen. The coil is interwoven with polypropylene fibers that are intended to cause irritation and create scar tissue, expanding it to a size that blocks the Fallopian tube. Essure's problems, experts theorize, may stem from the body's natural auto-immune system that attacks this foreign object causing it to fragment into pieces that are free to migrate to other parts of a woman's sexual reproductive system such as the uterus and ovaries. These delicate tissues can be easily punctured and cause an infection that requires an emergency radical hysterectomy to remove as much Essure as possible. Essure women suffering from Essure pain would be well advised to consult with an Essure lawyer to ascertain if they qualify to file a claim against Essure's maker, Bayer Pharmaceuticals for bringing a faulty medical device to market.
