Women Experiencing a Condition Known as Sterilization Regret May Want Essure Reversed

Tens of thousands of women, roughly 20% of Essure patients, experience "sterilization regret" and want to have Essure reversed in order to be able to become pregnant again

Wednesday, January 23, 2019 - Although Bayer clearly states that Essure is permanent birth control, often times an Essure woman simply changes her mind and wants to be able to have children. Essure reversal is complicated but can be done as a video on the medical website Contemporary OBGYN demonstrates. Before one attempts to have Essure removed and reversed, a woman should be aware of the pitfalls of Essure removal and reversal surgery. If all goes well the Essure device will be removed intact leaving the Fallopian tube torn, bruised, and severed. Reconnecting the sections of the Fallopian tube and also making sure that the passageway remains open requires the Essure reversal surgeon to insert a stint or one-inch hollow tube into one side of the Fallopian tube and into the uterus. The Fallopian tube is then surgically repaired around the hollow stint passageway. A woman's fertility is thus restored as the passageway to the uterus is reopened as long as the stint remains unblocked.

Women that simply want to have Essure removed before complications set in may opt for Essure removal only. Removing Essure is so difficult that the results of the procedure can be as bad as Essure's adverse symptoms. If Essure has remained in place within the Fallopian tube as intended Essure removal can still be hazardous. An Essure device that is encapsulated in scar tissue within the Fallopian tube does not just slide out gently but instead has to be grasped by a laparoscopic clamping device and tugged and pulled out of the Fallopian tube with force. This stress not only damages the Fallopian tube by tearing the inner tissues but also tends to stretch or break the Essure device. The force needed to pull an Essure coil out of a Fallopian tube is sufficient to break Essure into pieces. When Essure has been dislodged yet left behind in the Fallopian tube it is free to travel within a woman's reproductive system. Bayer warns that even when the device is intact, it can migrate and cause "perforation of the uterus and/or Fallopian tubes" as well as travel to other parts of the abdominal or pelvic cavity and cause persistent pain and internal and vaginal bleeding.

Bayer warns that removing Essure requires surgery and is fraught with complications that could include a woman having to undergo a hysterectomy. Thousands of Essure women, nonetheless, want it removed.

Finding a gynecological surgeon willing and able to remove and reverse Essure sterilization is difficult and expensive. Essure reversal is rarely covered by health insurance and can cost over $10,000. Essure woman wanting the device removed may have to travel hundreds if not thousands of miles and stay at a hotel at their own expense. Essure removal women have sought the advice of an Essure attorney to see if the qualify to file a claim and be reimbursed for their related expenses.
