Essure Doctors Ignore The Product Discontinuation Order And Are Still Recommending The Birth Control Device

Essure doctors put profits ahead of patient safety when they are loyal to Bayer and the failed Essure birth control device

Wednesday, February 6, 2019 - Around one-half of gynecologists surveyed by the Facebook Group Essure Problems are continuing to recommend and to use the now-defunct Essure birth control device according to the recently-launched Essure Problems newsletter. (1) Some doctors make no mention of the fact that the birth control device is no longer being manufactured or sold. Gynecologists are selling Essure in spite of the thousands of adverse event reports made to the FDA, and the device's manufacturer, Bayer Inc., discontinuing sales. Women have reported thousands of instances of device migrating to the uterus causing its entrapment there, severe cramps, excruciating constant, chronic pain, and heavy bleeding. Essure women have had the device break apart and perforate other organs in the reproductive system. Constant fatigue, headaches, total body rashes, and other symptoms too numerous to list have also been reported on www.essureproblems.com.

Doctors stand by Essure calling it a safe and effective alternative to more invasive sterilization procedure such as tubal ligation and hysterectomy. Women advocating against Essure are flabberghasted that these doctors are putting their own profits ahead of patient safety when continuing to recommend and use the device. Doctors that continue to sell Essure have the support of Bayer Inc. The company stands behind Essure saying that they discontinued Essure sales for economic and business reasons not because the device was malfunctioning. Bayer officials are on record saying that Essure's risk-reward profile remains positive. Others, however, blame Essure's removal from the market on the fact that so many women complained to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the agency took aggressive action. Early in 2018, the FDA forced Essure doctors to have prospective Essure patient read and sign a checklist of Essure's known adverse side effects. Sales of the birth control device were down around 70% from a year earlier at the time of the Essure withdrawal announcement. Those sales number may improve for Bayer, however, as doctors that continue to advocate for Essure actually "stocked-up" on the device prior to the December 31, 2018 discontinuation date.

Consumer advocacy organizations like the Essure Problems Facebook Group are monitoring Essure doctors to make sure that they continue to comply with the FDA's Essure warning mandate. Watchdogs have found that Essure doctor's offices continue to promote the birth control device using out-of-date marketing materials that ignore Essure known risks and also that Essure doctors are just flat out refusing to comply with the FDA checklist mandate. Investigative reporting by CNN uncovered that most doctors recommending Essure have had their objectivity tainted by legal yet unethical payments, sometimes in the hundreds of thousands of dollars by Bayer to doctors for nebulous activities such as "speaking engagements and educational seminars." Most believe that these payments were nothing more than under the table bribes to make sure that the doctors actively promoted Essure and defended the device when women came back wanting the device removed to alleviate the pain Essure was causing.
