Essure Removal Complications Will Last Decades

Thursday, July 26, 2018 - Tens of thousands of women, Erin Brockovich and a US Congressman have all joined forces to alert women of the dangers of Bayer's Essure Birth Control Device. Their efforts forced the FDA to require an Essure patient to fill out a questionnaire ensuring the government that the patient was aware of Essure's adverse side effect. Nothing screams "take me off the market" louder, however, than falling sales. Essure birth control device sales have fallen by 70% in 2018 and it is for that reason that Bayer has announced they will discontinue selling what was once the world's most popular method of birth control. Essure was once marketed as a simple yet effective form of birth control and one that could be reversed by its removal when a woman wanted to become pregnant. Essure removal turns out to be a much more complicated matter if one can even find a surgeon willing to attempt the procedure. The doctor that sold a woman her Essure is rarely willing to admit their liability by actually trying to remove the device nor are they able to refer a doctor that has experience removing Essure.

The Essure birth control device entails placing a foreign object into the vagina and up into both Fallopian tubes. The spring-like device sits on the inner wall of the Fallopian tube where it causes irritation and triggers the body's natural response to develop scar tissue and hold it in place and block fertilization. Unfortunately, pain, allergic reactions, and unnatural auto-immune responses, as well as many other symptoms, have led women to desire to have the device removed. While it still may be possible to safely remove Essure and return to having children, complications such as device migration, excessive scar tissue build up, and Essure's disintegration can make complete Essure remove difficult or impossible. When Essure is only partially removed, the adverse symptoms of the device may not only remain, they can get worse. Essure removal can break the device into many smaller pieces that are free to migrate throughout the body and puncture any organ that gets in their way.

One woman attempting Essure removal was told that she would have to travel thousands of miles and that her insurance would not cover the Essure removal surgery and that a complete hysterectomy would be required as Essure punctured and left the Fallopian tube and then re-entered at a different location causing tremendous and constant pain. She immediately started experiencing heavy periods, cramping and extreme pain, and a horrible bloating feeling. Painful intercourse and vaginal discharges were also symptoms of Essure.
