Essure Doctors May Not Be Objective When Dealing With Essure Problems

Essure doctors, many of whom are on the Bayer Pharmaceuticals payroll, are enthusiastic cheerleaders for the device and hesitant to blame Essure for causing a woman's adverse symptoms

Friday, September 28, 2018 - Approximately 40,000 women registered on the Facebook group Essure Problems have elaborated the adverse side effects they are experiencing and blame them on the Essure device. In addition to the adverse symptoms themselves, it is equally disturbing, to find out that many Essure victims are being told by their Essure gynecologist that the birth control device was not to blame for their debilitating pain, cramping, body rashes, migraine headaches, menstrual abnormalities, heavy bleeding, weight gain or loss and many, many other symptoms. Failing to take Essure women complaints seriously forced patients to either continue to suffer or to seek another medical opinion. There may be hundreds of thousands of woman who are continuing to suffer from Essure-related medical problems that have been misadvised by their gynecologist that their symptoms were "in their heads."

Doctors on Bayer's payroll are technically paid to educate other doctors about Essure and how to use it. According to CNN, "Bayer Pharmaceuticals has paid 11,850 doctors $2.5 million related to Essure." There is nothing illegal about Bayer Inc. paying gynecologists that sell Essure a "consulting fee" however, the practice may be unethical. Studies show that a doctor is more likely to recommend one drug over another if they are being compensated to do so. Doctors receiving backdoor payments for "educational services" may be recommending Essure over other forms of birth control. (1) Doctors who are being paid ten to twenty thousand dollars or more per year by Bayer may be reluctant to jeopardize their income stream by suspecting that Essure could be responsible for a patient's pain and suffering. Essure women report that they are being told by their doctors that their serious, adverse Essure symptoms are merely psychosomatic or were caused by a different, unknown reason when they go back to the doctor to complain. Essure doctors on Bayer's payroll are an unwillingness to acknowledge that Essure causes adverse reactions, and patients are left questioning their doctor's objectivity.

Doctors that receive payments from pharmaceutical or medical device companies are required to report them under the Physician Payment Sunshine Act. One doctor specializing in Obstetrics & Gynecology in Dallas, Texas was paid $431,000 over the four years between August 2013 and December 2016 by Bayer specifically for Essure. This particular doctor accounted for the payment as fees for consulting, travel and lodging, promotional speaking, and honoraria amongst other items. Essure and Bayer's payments were over 4 times greater than all of the other payments combined that the doctor received. It is not a stretch of the imagination to conclude this doctor is typical of an Essure doctor, and would enthusiastically recommend and defend Essure.

A woman suffering from the adverse symptoms of Essure usually seeks to have the device removed after battling with their gynecologist and may be left permanently sterile from having to undergo a hysterectomy to remove Essure.
