Essure Doctors Participate In Bayer's Unethical Marketing Campaign

While the majority of doctors are honest and ethical, there is a monetary incentive for doctors to promote medical devices that could do a women harm

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 - The lack of medical ethics that Essure doctors have exhibited is astonishing. Thousands of women suffering from the physical and psychological side effects of Essure returned to their gynecologists only to be told that "they were crazy," of that the pain they suffered was "all in their head." Essure doctors turned the tables on Essure patients and literally blamed them for the severe and life-threatening medical conditions that were caused by Essure. Essure doctors have been paid millions of dollars in fees some would say are unethical, not only to recommend Essure over other forms of birth control but also to ignore patients that complained of the device's adverse side effects. The vast majority of the 40,000 or so Essure Problems Facebook member that complain about the devices malfunctioning and state that their Essure doctor failed to explain the potential side effects to them. Judging by the hundreds of thousands of dollars that doctors have accepted from Bayer, Essure doctors medical ethics may have been severely corrupted.

The website www.probublica.org lists every doctor they can find that is taking payments from pharmaceutical and medical device companies and whose ethics may be questionable. Essure patients are urged to consult the list to see if their doctor may have recommended Essure because they were being paid by Bayer to do so, rather than from a careful consideration of Essure's side effects, in clear violation of the doctor's code of ethics. For example, Propublica.org lists Dr. Peter Rothschild, a gynecologist in Alexandria, Virginia, as one whose medical ethics may have been compromised by accepting payments from Bayer. Dr. Rothchild received 263 payments totaling $115,000 from a number of companies for performing such services as promotional speaking, travel and lodging, education, consulting, and food and beverage. $110,000 of his $115,000 in fees were paid by Bayer and over half of the money went to promotional speaking and "other" expenses. Another doctor, Dr. Cindy Basinski from Newburgh, Indiana, has accepted 287 payments from pharmaceutical and medical device companies mainly for consulting and promotional speaking and "other" activities. Half of the fees this gynecologist takes are from Bayer. San Bernadino gynecologist Dr. Rachel Steward accepted over $48,000 from Bayer for reasons similar to the ones above. Thousands of other doctors have received payments in other amounts from Bayer. It is hard to imagine a woman could receive an objective medical opinion from a doctor who is a paid consultant for a particular medical device company.

Essure patients are being made fully aware of Essure's adverse side effects from the public campaigns of the Facebook Group Essure Problems, activist Erin Brokovich's website and the Netflix documentary, "The Bleeding Edge." Their efforts influenced the FDA to clamp down on Essure forcing additional disclosure requirements. Essure sales fell 70% when women were made aware of Essure's potential for injury or death. Bayer intends to pull Essure from the US market at the end of 2018 due to lack of demand for the product. Essure doctors continue to ignore these warnings and continue to recommend the device stating that the benefits of the device outweigh the risks.
